Vietnam’s Sapper Unit No. 4, deployed to the United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei, Africa, held a gift-giving event for local residents and children on Monday.

The event was held ahead of the 81st anniversary of the Vietnam People’s Army and the 36th All-People’s National Defense Day (December 22).

Hundreds of packages, including daily necessities, school supplies, and clothing, were handed to residents and children.

Many locals expressed heartfelt thanks to the Vietnamese sappers for the gifts.

Lieutenant Colonel Tran Thanh Son, deputy head of Sapper Unit No. 4, said in less than three months on the ground, the team has completed all UN-assigned tasks while quickly addressing urgent local needs.

A notable example is the repair and upgrading of Banton Bridge, the area’s only transport route, which directly affects security as well as economic and social activities.

The project has significantly improved mobility and safety for residents in Abyei, a disputed region between Sudan and South Sudan spanning about 10,000 square kilometers.

Father Archangelo Michael, a representative of the Catholic Church in Abyei, said the Vietnamese soldiers brought children not only books and school supplies but also renewed confidence in a brighter future.

He added that these efforts have forged a bond, making residents regard Vietnamese blue-beret soldiers as family and trusted companions.

The initiative reflects the people-centered tradition of Vietnamese soldiers and Vietnam’s commitment to building trust and lasting relationships in Abyei.
