Can Tho City in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta is advancing 19 large-scale wind power projects with a combined investment of more than US$3.5 billion, as part of a plan to develop 21 wind power projects with a total capacity of over 2,390 MW by 2030, according to local authorities.

On Sunday, Le Cong Ly, standing deputy chairman of the Can Tho administration, signed a plan to develop the city’s marine economy through 2030, with a vision to 2045.

Under the plan, Can Tho aims to implement 21 wind power projects by 2030, with a combined capacity of 2,390.2 MW in accordance with the revised National Power Development Plan VIII.

Of these, 19 large-scale projects have already received approval for their investment policies, and the city is currently selecting investors for them.

Together, the 19 projects represent more than VND92 trillion (over $3.5 billion) in investment.

They include the Vinh Hai 1 Wind Power Project, with a capacity of 400 MW and a cost of VND15.9 trillion ($605.3 million), and the Phu Cuong 1A and 1B Wind Power Complex, with a combined capacity of 200 MW and a total investment of VND9.139 trillion ($348 million).

Other projects include the Vinh Tan Wind Power Project, which has a capacity of 200 MW and an investment of VND9.119 trillion ($347.1 million), and the 270 MW Vinh Hai 2 project with a cost of VND11.005 trillion ($419 million).

With these projects, the city wants to ensure a stable and secure energy supply while prioritizing renewable energy sources.

Beyond wind power, Can Tho also plans to develop offshore reclamation projects and build Tran De Port, while promoting heavy industries such as metallurgy and shipbuilding.

In addition, the city aims to manage and exploit offshore sand resources more effectively to meet demand for construction and land-filling materials for infrastructure projects, including expressways in the Mekong Delta.
