Vietnamese conglomerate T&T Group’s wind power project in Laos earns $36.5mn after 7 months

Located in Savannakhet Province, Savan 1 was developed by T&T Group with a total investment of about $768 million and a designed capacity of 495MW.

Its first phase, with a capacity of 300MW and 48 wind turbines, is expected to supply around 0.9 billion kWh of electricity annually to Vietnam.

T&T Group said it developed the wind farm alongside a 220kV transmission line connecting the facility in Savannakhet to a grid connection point in Quang Tri Province, north-central Vietnam, as well as infrastructure serving the construction process.

It took just 12 months to complete the nearly 70km 220kV transmission line linking the wind farm to the connection point on the Vietnamese side.

Four months later, the entire first phase officially began commercial operations, a notably fast timeline for a large-scale cross-border wind power project.

Beyond its economic significance, Savan 1 is also contributing to Vietnam’s goal of increasing electricity imports under the energy cooperation agreement between the governments of Vietnam and Laos, while highlighting the growing role of the private sector in cross-border infrastructure projects.

According to T&T Group's estimates, the project's first phase could generate around $62.5 million in annual revenue.

Once the entire project is completed, annual revenue is expected to rise to nearly $97.3 million, while supplying around 1.4 billion kWh of electricity to Vietnam's power system.

In the energy sector, Savan 1 is part of T&T Group's broader strategy to develop wind power, solar power, LNG-fired power, and other new energy sources, with a target total capacity of 25-30GW by 2035.
