A man in Quang Ngai Province, central Vietnam has been charged with theft for retrieving his own motorbike after it was impounded by police over a drink-driving offense.

The police agency in Nghia Hanh Commune on Wednesday announced that officers had issued decisions to initiate a criminal case and charge Nguyen Khanh, a 30-year-old resident of Phuoc Giang Commune, for the offense of theft of property.

Notably, the motorbike involved was registered in the suspect’s own name.

On the afternoon of December 14 last year, Khanh rode his motorbike to the former Mo Duc District to visit friends, where he consumed beer and alcohol.

At around 8:20 pm the same day, while riding home and passing a roundabout in Nghia Hanh Commune, he was stopped by a patrol team from the Duc Pho traffic police station for a breath alcohol test.

Officers determined that Khanh had violated regulations on blood alcohol concentration.

As such, he was booked and fined, while his motorcycle was impounded in accordance with the law.

Khanh admitted the traffic violation.

However, about 25 minutes later, while the patrol team moved the seized motorbike to the impound area and continued their traffic control duties, Khanh secretly returned, took the motorbike from the impound site, and rode it home to hide it.

After discovering the incident, police in Nghia Hanh Commune immediately launched an investigation to identify and track down the perpetrator.

Within 24 hours, officers determined that Khanh was responsible for taking the impounded motorcycle.

Investigators stated that although the motorbike was registered under Khanh’s name, at the time it was seized it was under the lawful management of a state authority.

His act of removing the motorcycle from the impound area without permission was deemed an infringement upon state-managed property.

Police in Nghia Hanh Commune urged the public to strictly comply with the law, particularly regulations on handling administrative violations in road traffic.

Any deliberate acts to evade enforcement or infringe upon property managed by state authorities will be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law.
