A 54-year-old man in Ha Tinh Province, north-central Vietnam collapsed and died while playing pickleball, local health authorities said on Thursday.

According to Ha Tinh General Hospital, the man, identified as N.D., a resident of Nam Ha Ward in Ha Tinh City, was brought to the hospital after he lost consciousness on a pickleball court on Wednesday afternoon.

He was pronounced dead on arrival.

Doctors said he had suffered cardiac arrest before reaching the hospital.

Initial reports said N.D. had been playing pickleball with friends at a local court when he suddenly collapsed at around 5:30 pm.

The hospital confirmed that the patient had a history of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition that can increase the risk of sudden cardiac arrest during intense physical activity.

N.D. was known to regularly engage in sports, including badminton.

Dr. Pham Huu Da, head of the hospital’s cardiology department, advised the public to exercise in ways appropriate to their health and fitness levels.

He also recommended routine medical check-ups to help individuals manage diet and physical activity based on professional guidance.
