Vietnamese shuttler reaches German Open semis after Indian opponent retires in quarter-finals

Vietnamese shuttler Nguyen Thuy Linh advanced to the semi-finals of the German Open 2025 on Saturday after her Indian opponent, Tasnim Mir, retired in the quarter-finals.

Linh, ranked 29th in the world, and Mir, ranked 72nd, delivered a dramatic quarter-final match. 

Despite Mir once being in the world’s top 10 young players, Linh entered the match with confidence, playing aggressively to force Mir into a defensive position.

However, the 19-year-old Mir, displaying impressive physical strength, countered with some difficult shots and led 3-1 early. 

Linh quickly equalized at 3-3, and the two traded points in a tightly contested first game. 

Mir led 14-12 at one point, but Linh caught up. 

Yet, a series of unforced errors from Linh allowed Mir to secure a 21-19 win in game 1.

In the second game, Linh changed her strategy, opting for exploiting Mir’s weaknesses. 

She successfully neutralized Mir’s smashes and forced errors, winning 21-12 to level the match.

In game 3, Mir struggled with an injury, which eventually led her to retire while trailing 7-0. 

Linh advanced to the semi-finals and will face Japan’s Rio Gunji, ranked 41st in the world.
