Vietnamese singer sparks outrage for posing atop ancient house in Hoi An

Photos of 44-year-old singer Duc Tuan's striking poses on the roof of an old house in Hoi An Ancient Town have sparked a wave of criticism across Vietnamese social media.

Nguyen Van Son, chairman of the People’s Committee of Hoi An City, where the ancient town is located, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Thursday morning that the administration had been notified of an individual using the roof of an old house in the town as a background for his photoshoot.

The Hoi An administration has asked relevant units to verify the case.

The verified Facebook account of singer Duc Tuan, Duc Tuan - the Divo, uploaded a series of photos of the singer shot in Hoi An Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Quang Nam Province, central Vietnam, on Wednesday.

These photos were snapped not long ago, according to information displayed in his post on Facebook.

Some photos depict him walking and sitting on the tile roof of an ancient house.

Climbing on the roofs of ancient houses in the town is against laws on heritage preservation.

The behavior might harm the state of the old houses.

Replying to a query about the photo album on Facebook, the administrator of the account said that those photos were taken in Hoi An Ancient Town, but the house, which the singer and his crew chose as the background for the photoshoot, had previously been rebuilt and utilized for photoshoot purposes.

Hoi An was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.

Singer Duc Tuan is well known for some songs such as ‘Nua hon thuong dau’ and ‘Tinh ca pho.’

Several people, including some influencers, had previously climbed onto the roofs of old houses in the town for photoshoots.

They had to remove these photos from their social media accounts and make apologies following public outrage and enforcement measures taken by local authorities.
