Vietnamese students sweep awards at int’l mathematics competition in Japan

All 34 Vietnamese students won awards at the World Mathematics Invitational (WMI) 2026, held in Japan from July 10 to 14.

The Vietnamese team consisted of students from elementary, middle, and high schools, competing alongside more than 1,100 contestants from 26 countries and territories such as the United States, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong.

The competition featured both multiple-choice and written examination components.

Awards were presented in several categories, including diamond medals, awarded to the top three percent of scorers in each grade level, gold medals to the top 15 percent, followed by silver medals, bronze medals, and honorable mentions.

At the closing and awards ceremony, all 34 Vietnamese contestants were recognized.

The team earned a total of two diamond medals, five gold medals, nine silver medals, 11 bronze medals, and seven honorable mentions, achieving a 100-percent award rate.

Among the standout performers was Nguyen Quang Anh, a ninth grader at the Japanese International School.

The student won a diamond medal, ranked second in the world in the Grade 9 division, and received the Star of the World trophy as the highest-scoring member of the Vietnamese delegation.

Another diamond medal was awarded to Au Vu Thai Son, a third-grade student at Brighton College Vietnam, who finished third in the world in the Grade 3 category.

Meanwhile, Ha Nam Phong, a seventh-grade student from Ngo Si Lien Middle School in Hanoi’s Cua Nam Ward, claimed a gold medal and received the Legend Award as he has earned gold medals for three consecutive years.

The World Mathematics Invitational was established in 2013 by Kun-Lung Tsai, chairman of the Chinese Mathematics Association, and Professor Quan Lam of the University of California, Berkeley.
