Police in the Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu have arrested a 23-year-old woman for human trafficking.
Tran Thi Diem Thuy, a resident of Vinh Thinh Commune, Hoa Binh District, told investigators that she had conspired with her accomplices to sell five women to Chinese men for between VND100 (US$4,485) and VND200 million ($8,971) each.
Two of Thuy’s co-conspirators had already been detained for promising Vietnamese women well-paid jobs and selling them to China.
In March, local police arrested Ly Bup Pha, 40, and Son Thi Lan, 50, on charges of “trafficking humans and extortion of property.”
According to the indictment, last year, a man named P., from Vinh Loi District, Bac Lieu, introduced N.T.A.T., a 15-year-old girl, to Pha and Lan.
The couple promised T. a job in China, before the victim was finally sold to a Chinese man for VND120 million ($5,382).
Sometime later, the girl discovered the truth and called Pha to ask him to bring her back to Vietnam.
Pha then contacted T.’s relatives and demanded that they pay VND40 million ($1,794) as ransom.
T. is the youngest of the five victims of Thuy and her accomplices.
