A Vietnamese woman has recovered about US$15,180 after mistakenly transferring the money to a Russian tourist staying in Bac Nha Trang Ward, Khanh Hoa Province, south-central Vietnam, following swift intervention by local police.

Khanh Hoa police said on Thursday they had received a letter of appreciation from Le Thi Mung, a 47-year-old resident of Thanh Hoa Province, north-central Vietnam, after officers helped her recover the full amount.

The transfer occurred on February 25, when Mung accidentally sent VND400 million (about $15,180) to the bank account of Vasileva Elena, a Russian national temporarily residing in Bac Nha Trang.

After discovering the mistake, she reported the case to Khanh Hoa police the following day.

Upon receiving the report, officers quickly coordinated with relevant parties to verify and resolve the case.

By the afternoon of February 26, police had worked with Elena to explain relevant legal provisions and encouraged her to return the money.

Elena returned the full amount to Mung later the same day in the presence of police.

In her thank-you letter, Mung expressed surprise and gratitude at how quickly the money was recovered, saying the prompt and responsible response by police helped protect her property and left a strong impression of officers serving the public.
