Can Tho City in southern Vietnam is seeking to deepen cooperation with Thailand by expanding tourism, trade, and investment partnerships, particularly focused on river tourism and floating markets.

The People’s Committee of Can Tho City, in coordination with the municipal Union of Friendship Organizations and the Royal Thai Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City, held a ceremony on Tuesday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Thailand (August 6, 1976 - August 6, 2026).

On the sidelines of the event, Can Tho deputy chairman Vuong Quoc Nam met with Thai Consul General Wiraka Moodhitaporn. Nam thanked the Royal Thai Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City for co-organizing the celebration, describing it as a meaningful event commemorating the two countries’ longstanding diplomatic ties.

Can Tho is currently home to five Thai-invested projects with a combined registered capital of approximately US$119 million.

The city hopes to work more closely with the Royal Thai Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City to promote cooperation in agricultural and seafood processing, high-tech agriculture, logistics and cold storage, clean energy, environmental technology, and trade.

Moodhitaporn said she hoped to continue serving as a bridge between Can Tho and Thailand by helping the city strengthen ties with Thai localities, business associations, enterprises, and educational institutions while supporting cooperation in river tourism development.

The ceremony to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Thailand featured exhibitions showcasing the two countries' friendship, displays highlighting five decades of bilateral cooperation, and cultural performances by artists from both countries.

It attracted representatives of government agencies, organizations, businesses, and students from Vietnam and Thailand.

More than a year after Vietnam’s administrative restructuring, Can Tho is leveraging its role as a key economic hub in the Mekong Delta to expand international cooperation, particularly with Thai partners in investment, trade, and tourism.
