Vietnam’s Golden Stars chess team has won the International Chess Federation (FIDE) World Team Amateur Rapid Chess Cup 2026 in Hong Kong after an unbeaten run against a strong field of international opponents.

The tournament marks the first time the FIDE has organized a competition exclusively for amateur rapid chess teams.

The Vietnamese squad secured the title on Sunday and received a prize of €10,000 (US$11,500).

The team comprised Nguyen Duy Dat, Tran Minh Hieu, Hoang Minh Hieu, Nguyen Anh Bao Thy, Mai Duc Kien, and Huynh Phuc Minh Phuong.

After nine rounds under the Swiss system, Golden Stars topped Group A to advance to the final against Mongolia’s Bosoo Noyon, the Group B winner.

Golden Stars maintained their form in the championship match and defeated Bosoo Noyon to claim the title.

Bosoo Noyon finished as the runner-up, while Hong Kong Young Dragons from Hong Kong placed third.

“We believe this achievement will make headlines in Vietnam and help promote the development of chess in the country,” Vietnamese team captain That Nhu Tung told The Thao & Van Hoa (Sports & Culture) newspaper.
