Hue City in central Vietnam has been named a ‘National Winner’ in the 2026 One Planet City Challenge (OPCC), a program run by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), in recognition of its efforts in climate action and sustainable urban development.

The OPCC is a global initiative designed by WWF to support cities in strengthening climate resilience through integrated and ambitious climate-related action.

The Hue administration said on Monday that the ‘National Winner – One Planet City Challenge 2026’ title reflects the city’s steady progress in responding to climate change and advancing sustainable urban development.

The honor also highlights Hue’s efforts to develop into a green, smart, and environmentally friendly city, while reinforcing its role as a pioneer in global climate action.

According to WWF, the evaluation was based on the OPCC Assessment Framework and cities’ climate reporting through the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) reporting track, known as the CDP-ICLEI Track, the Voice of Vietnam reported, citing WWF.

WWF said it encourages targets aligned with the Paris Agreement, risk-informed climate adaptation with clear objectives and ongoing implementation, as well as the integration of key value chains and urban stakeholders to build a low-carbon future accessible to all.

The organization also lauded Hue’s climate adaptation efforts, which are based on practical risk assessments and intended to strengthen urban resilience against natural disasters and extreme weather events.

WWF further noted the active participation of city government agencies, organizations, businesses, and local communities in policymaking, as well as in promoting green, low-emission urban development solutions that balance economic growth, environmental protection, and quality of life.

In the coming years, Hue plans to continue promoting sustainable urban development, green transition initiatives, the application of science and technology, and climate resilience measures.

The city also aims to become a centrally-governed heritage city characterized by green and clean development, in line with its long-term vision for sustainable growth.
