Financial statements released by 27 listed banks showed their combined after-tax profit reached a record VND89.3 trillion (US$3.4 billion) in April-June, surpassing the previous peak of VND77.3 trillion ($2.9 billion) in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Notably, seven lenders recorded their highest quarterly profits since listing, including Vietcombank, VietinBank, Techcombank, HDBank, ABBank, NCB, and Vietbank.
Vietcombank remained the industry’s most profitable bank as it reported an after-tax profit of VND14.6 trillion ($555 million), up 53.8 percent from the first quarter. VietinBank followed with VND11.8 trillion ($449 million), marking a 31.5-percent increase.
VPBank posted the second-strongest profit growth among the sector’s leading lenders, with its earnings rising 38.7 percent quarter on quarter to VND8.8 trillion ($334 million).
The spike lifted the bank three places to rank as the third most profitable lender in the industry.
However, the figure remained below its record high of VND8.9 trillion ($339 million) recorded in the first quarter of 2022.
VPBank’s rise pushed MB and Techcombank down the rankings.
MB slipped one notch to fourth, while Techcombank fell two spots to sixth, despite both banks reporting profit growth of around 10 percent during the quarter.
Meanwhile, 13 banks reported lower profits in the second quarter.
PGBank recorded the sharpest decline, with its after-tax profit falling 40.5 percent to VND131 billion ($5 million).
VietABank’s profit dropped 36.8 percent to VND258 billion ($9.8 million), while Bac A Bank posted a 19.0 percent decline to VND243 billion ($9.2 million).
Saigonbank was the only lender to swing from profit to loss, reporting a deficit of VND34 billion ($1.3 million) after posting a profit of VND73 billion ($2.8 million) in the previous quarter.
Other banks that saw profits decline by more than 10 percent included VIB, Sacombank, MSB, and SeABank.
Overall, 14 banks reported profit growth in the second quarter of 2026, while 13 recorded declines.
The sharp increase in total sector earnings suggests that profit growth was concentrated among the industry’s largest lenders.
