Vietnam's Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong wins re-election

The incumbent General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam has been re-elected for a second term, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

The official news agency published a picture on Wednesday afternoon showing delegates congratulating Nguyen Phu Trong, the current Party boss, on his re-election to the post at the first meeting of the 12^th Party Central Committee in Hanoi.

General Secretary Trong is 72 years old this year. His re-election will be formally endorsed by the 12^th National Party Congress on Thursday.

The quinquennial congress, scheduled for January 20-28, named 200 members of the committee on Tuesday, including 180 official members and 20 alternate seats.

The grand event is organized to shape the Vietnamese leadership for the next five years.

The Party Central Committee is a powerful panel that elects the Politburo, which is the ultimate body of the Party.

The Vietnam News Agency reported that the 12^th Party Central Committee had also finished voting the Politburo, Secretariat, and Central Inspection Commission and its chairman.

The 12^th National Party Congress is attended by 1,510 delegates representing 4.5 million Party members across the country.
