The new route connecting southeastern Chinese city of guangzhou with Phu Quoc Island had a successful inaugural flight on Wednesday as the China Southern Airlines plane safely landed on the Vietnamese island.
Guangdong-based China Southern Airlines became the first carrier to operate the direct route from Guangzhou to Phu Quoc as it landed its first flight at Phu Quoc International Airport in Vietnam’s southern Kien Giang Province.
Home to 103,000 permanent residents, the 574 square kilometer island in the Gulf of Thailand is Vietnam’s largest island and a popular tourist destination. In 2006, Phu Quoc was recognized as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
China Southern Airlines plans to operate flights from Guangzhou to Phu Quoc and back every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, with as many as 1,000 expected passengers weekly.
Phu Quoc Island is the airline’s fifth destination in Vietnam, with the first four being Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Nha Trang.
China is the sixth country to service a direct route to the Vietnamese island, coming behind Russia, Sweden, South Korea, Singapore, and Cambodia.
Phu Quoc Island welcomed 42 international flights with over 5,000 passengers in the first half of 2016.
