Phu Quoc was previously an island district under Kien Giang Province, but since July 1, 2025, Kien Giang has been merged into An Giang under a national administrative restructuring, resulting in the establishment of the special zone.
Earlier, on September 25, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam granted an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and an Approved Training Organization (ATO) certificate to the new carrier — Vietnam’s first ‘resort airline’ model.
Speaking at the launch ceremony in Hanoi on Tuesday, Dang Minh Truong, chairman of Sun Group, said the new airline aims to expand opportunities for travel, leisure, and exploration in Phu Quoc for all Vietnamese people and international visitors.
Earlier the same day, the airline began ticket sales and announced that its first commercial flights would start on November 1, 2025.
The carrier currently operates three Airbus A321 aircraft and plans to expand its fleet to eight by the end of 2025, 25 by late 2026, and 30–35 by 2027.
With a total investment of VND2.5 trillion (around US$95 million), Sun PhuQuoc Airways follows a full-service traditional model combined with charter flight operations.
In its initial phase, the airline will operate routes connecting Phu Quoc with Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Da Nang, as well as flights between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and between Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang.
From December 2025, the network will expand to include routes such as Hanoi–Da Nang and Cam Ranh–Phu Quoc, strengthening links between Vietnam’s major tourist hubs and Phu Quoc, often referred to as the ‘pearl island.’
“For Sun Group, aviation is the wings that complete our integrated tourism ecosystem, helping to make Phu Quoc — and Vietnam as a whole — a top destination in the region and the world,” Truong said.
The new airline’s name, inspired by Phu Quoc Special Zone, not only reflects its identity but also embodies Sun Group’s strategic vision to accompany the island’s growth and transform it into an international tourism hotspot and an emerging aviation hub in the region.
In his remarks at the ceremony, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Construction Le Anh Tuan praised the launch of Sun PhuQuoc Airways as an inspiring and proud milestone for the country’s aviation industry.
