Vietnam’s public security minister welcomes US-Asia Pacific cooperation

Visiting Vietnamese Minister of Public Security General Tran Dai Quang has told his U.S. host that his country welcomes the strengthened cooperation between the U.S. and the Asia-Pacific region, including Vietnam.

General Quang made the statement during his meeting with Scot Marciel, State Department Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for East Asia and the Pacific, in Washington D.C. on Sunday, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

The Vietnamese official, who is also a Politburo member, said that Vietnam always supports such cooperation on the basis of respecting the United Nations Charter, international law, and countries’ political institutions, independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

General Quang also expressed his pleasure at the sound development of bilateral relations in socio-economy, security, defense, and crime prevention, especially since the two countries established their comprehensive partnership in July 2013.

He affirmed that Vietnam consistently pursues a foreign policy of independence, peace, cooperation and development, adding that this policy also includes multilateralization and diversification of relations, and proactive international integration.

Marciel hailed Minister Quang’s visit as a promising start to a number of activities to be held this year to mark the 20th anniversary of the normalization of relations between the U.S. and Vietnam.

Hanoi and Washington restored their diplomatic ties in 1995, twenty years after the American war in Vietnam ended.

On the same day, General Quang also visited the Vietnamese Embassy and asked its staff to devote themselves to facilitating cooperation between the two countries.
