Vietnam’s Quang Ninh police to sponsor 10-year-old survivor of Ha Long Bay boat tragedy

The police department of Quang Ninh Province, northern Vietnam has pledged to sponsor a 10-year-old boy who survived the tragic capsizing of the Vinh Xanh tour boat in Ha Long Bay until adulthood, the department announced on Friday.

Major General Tran Van Phuc, director of the provincial police department, visited H., the young survivor, at the National Children's Hospital in Hanoi to offer encouragement and financial support.

H. lost close family members in the July 19 disaster and is currently receiving treatment for severe psychological trauma.

Expressing deep sympathy for the child’s loss, Major General Phuc said the Quang Ninh police force not only ensures public security but also shares responsibility in supporting the less fortunate in the community.

On behalf of the provincial police leadership, he also presented VND200 million (US$7,670) in financial support and announced that the provincial police would sponsor the boy until he reaches adulthood.

H., a student at Chu Van An Elementary School in Hoang Mai Ward, Hanoi, was among the few survivors rescued from the deadly accident that claimed dozens of lives.

The tour boat Vinh Xanh 58, carrying 46 passengers and three crew members, capsized on the afternoon of July 19 after being hit by a sudden squall while touring Ha Long Bay.

Authorities have recovered 38 bodies and rescued 10 survivors. One person remains missing.
