The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS today announced two grants, awarded to the VinaCapital Foundation and Room To Read in Vietnam.
The VinaCapital Foundation (VCF) has been awarded a grant of US$30,000 to fund the “UPS, Heartbeat of Vietnam” program from August 2013 onward.
The program supports underprivileged children with congenital heart diseases through pre-operation care, open-heart surgeries, and post operation follow-up care.
UPS volunteers will team up with VCF coordinators to provide support throughout the post-operation recovery phase. The volunteer team will also visit the children to assess their social and health environments, and follow-up with recommendations and funding to make improvements to the children’s livelihoods.
In addition, a grant of US$26,750 has been awarded to Room To Read (RTR), an organization that aims to bring educational opportunities to disadvantaged children.
The grant will be used to furnish three libraries with new children’s books and educational material, and to provide inclusive learning environments where reading can thrive.
Teachers and librarians will be further trained on how to manage libraries and how to conduct learning activities through books.
The grant will also be used to support the RTR’s Publishing Program, an integral partner of the School Libraries Program, which seeks to increase the quantity and diversity of children’s books available in libraries in Vietnam. UPS volunteers will interact with the children through experience-sharing sessions and help children develop a habit of reading.
“UPS has a long history of dedicating financial and human resources to support social programs that make a long-lasting difference in the communities where we do business,” commented Jeff McLean, UPS General Manager for Vietnam.
“We are pleased to be able to support VinaCapital Foundation and Room To Read, organizations building upon the commitment to improve the quality of life for the children in Vietnam,” he added.
