A woman in Ho Chi Minh City has been fined VND1.5 million (US$57.4) for dumping household waste into Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe Canal despite being reminded not to litter.

The Gia Dinh Ward People’s Committee said on Monday that it had booked and imposed an administrative fine against T.Q.T. for disposing of household waste into the canal.

The case came to light after a nearly one-minute video circulated on social media showing a woman standing along the canal in Gia Dinh Ward and throwing rubbish into the water.

While she was dumping the waste, a man called out, “Why are you throwing rubbish into the river?” and urged her to stop.

The woman ignored the warnings and continued throwing pieces of paper and empty cans into the canal.

After the video was posted on social media, authorities in Gia Dinh Ward identified the woman and summoned her to verify the incident.
