Work begins on US$99.6mn convention hub in Vietnam’s Hai Phong

Authorities in Vietnam’s northern city of Hai Phong broke ground for a convention and performance hub project in the Bac Song Cam urban area in Thuy Nguyen District with total investment of over VND2.3 trillion (US$99.6 million) on Saturday.

The groundbreaking ceremony featured the participation of Vuong Dinh Hue, chairman of the lawmaking National Assembly, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang and other high-ranking officials.

Large-scale events such as national and international conferences and seminars and performance art programs will be organized at the convention and performance hub, which will cover a total floor area of more than 49,500 square meters and accommodate 1,500 seats.

When in place, the convention and performance hub will contribute to perfecting the architectural cityscape and backing the city’s socio-economic growth, said Nguyen Van Tung, chairman of the Hai Phong City People’s Committee.

In 2016, the prime minister passed a plan to develop technical infrastructure for the Bac Song Cam new urban area on a total area of 317 hectares and at total cost of some VND10 trillion ($426.5 million).

Hai Phong City has developed for more than 100 years, so many administrative agencies that were built several years ago are seen incapable of holding major events, Tung said, adding that the construction of the center is a need.

The project will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2025.

The construction of the hub was aimed at marking the 68th anniversary of Hai Phong City Liberation Day on May 13.

The convention and performance center project was approved by the Hai Phong City People’s Council in July 2021.

In early 2023, authorities in Hai Phong City initiated the construction of a new political-administrative center and a traffic and technical infrastructure system worth more than VND2.5 trillion ($107 million) in the new urban area.
