Yes, you can now visit ‘Kong: Skull Island’ film set in northern Vietnam

The film set of Hollywood blockbuster ‘Kong: Skull Island’ in northern Vietnam’s Ninh Binh Province is open to the public free of charge starting Saturday.

The set, located in the Trang An Landscape Complex in Ninh Binh’s Hoa Lu District, was the filming location for a made-up tribal village that appeared in the movie, and whose Kong-worshipping villagers played a vital role in the storyline.

According to Bui Van Manh, deputy director of the management of Trang An Landscape Complex, the entire tribal village has been reconstructed to welcome tourists based on how it appeared in the movie.

“The tribal village set spans ten hectares and features 36 conical huts, accommodated by over 50 villagers role-played by locals,” Manh said. “The idea was jointly initiated by the management of Trang An and a local company.”

Apart from the huts and villagers, many farming tools made from bamboo and clay are also present at the imitated set as they appeared in the movie, according to observations by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporters on Saturday.

Models of U.S. airplanes and rifles are set up near a stream, while a walking path has also been paved from stone to help tourists approach the set with ease.

Face-painted, spear-wielding shirtless villagers are positioned around the village to ensure a realistic vibe for visitors.

“I don’t know if this is how the village in the movie is supposed to look like in real life, but it seems a bit makeshift and disappointing,” said 25-year-old Nguyen Thi Hoa, who had travelled from her hometown in Hai Duong Province to visit the set.

Hoa’s feelings were shared by other visitors at the set on Saturday morning.

To approach the set, tourists can take the second boat line at the Trang An Tourist Site, according to the set’s management.

‘Kong: Skull Island’, which hit cinemas on March 10, was filmed in the Vietnamese provinces of Quang Binh, Quanh Ninh and Ninh Binh for up to 70 percent of its runtime.

The movie, directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, starred Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, and Brie Larson as its main cast.

As of April 15, the film has racked up US$538.4 million in theaters against a budget of $185 million, according to box office -tracking site Box Office Mojo.
