Pumps deployed to drain flooding at Ho Chi Minh City’s iconic bridge

A prolonged downpour from noon to the early afternoon of Thursday flooded the foot of Ba Son Bridge on the Thu Thiem side in Ho Chi Minh City, prompting the city’s drainage company to deploy pumps and workers to drain the water.

The flooded section on Street R12 has emerged as a new trouble spot as drainage infrastructure in the area remains incomplete and the road surface is relatively low.

The inundated stretch extends for several dozen meters following heavy rain.

R12 is a key arterial route connecting Thu Thiem New Urban Area with downtown Ho Chi Minh City via Ba Son Bridge.

Flooding along the route can cause significant disruption to traffic.

During Thursday's rainfall, Ho Chi Minh City Urban Drainage Company dispatched workers to the site and operated pumps to remove the accumulated water.

The city currently has 50 locations which suffer severe flooding following heavy rainfall.

Under the city's 2026 drainage and flood-control plan, nine projects are scheduled for completion this year to address flooding at three of those 50 locations.

The nine projects, with a total investment of more than VND7.15 trillion (US$275 million), target flooding on Phan Van Hon Street, in Binh Quoi and at the intersection of National Highway 51 and Huynh Thuc Khang Street.

The remaining 47 hotspots are scheduled to be addressed under the city's 2026-30 drainage and flood-control plan.

The flooded section at the foot of Ba Son Bridge is not included among the 50 locations.
