The incident occurred on March 13 in Lanh Ngoc Commune, where a chained dog broke loose and attacked dogs belonging to three nearby households.

It later bit a child and two other residents before being killed by locals.

Tests confirmed the dog was positive for the rabies virus, according to the Da Nang Center for Disease Control.

“All exposed individuals have received rabies immunoglobulin and are continuing a full five-dose vaccination course,” said Dang Quang Anh, a senior official in charge of infectious disease prevention at the center.

Authorities said they had disinfected the area and were tracing additional people who may have been exposed.

Da Nang has recorded seven rabies outbreaks in dogs across several communes so far this year, the agency said, following 28 outbreaks in 2025.

No human deaths from rabies have been reported to date, and all bite cases linked to the outbreaks have been treated in line with medical guidelines.

Health officials warned that there is a risk of transmission from animals to humans, urging residents to seek prompt medical care after bites and to vaccinate pets to prevent the spread of the disease.
