A screenshot from a video shows a pod of dolphins, including several rare pink dolphins, swimming off the coast of Do Son in Hai Phong City, northern Vietnam.

Nguyen Quang Dien, chairman of the Do Son Ward administration, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the dolphin sighting was first recorded on Sunday morning by a patrol team from the Do Son Border Guard Station during a routine mission at sea.

The team spotted the pod swimming about one nautical mile from Hon Dau Island in the waters off Do Son.

According to Dien, dolphins recently appeared in the area’s coastal waters.

The local official said that the frequent appearance of dolphins indicates a clean marine environment, a rich ecosystem, and abundant food sources.

In Vietnamese coastal communities, dolphins are also traditionally viewed as symbols of good fortune for fishermen.

Dien added that not only dolphins but also other marine species have been returning in larger numbers to the waters off Do Son, especially small shrimp species.

The official attributed the environmental improvements partly to ongoing clean-up campaigns organized by local authorities. These efforts include collecting marine waste, cleaning beaches, and improving water quality in coastal areas.

Local authorities have also cleared several inefficient traditional business sites to make way for adjusted urban planning and the development of high-end, eco-friendly tourism projects.
