Hundreds of people gathered along the streets of Ho Chi Minh City, holding white chrysanthemums to pay their respects as vehicles carrying the soldiers' remains made their way to their final resting place.

Earlier that morning, city authorities held a memorial and tribute ceremony at Le Thi Rieng Park, where the remains had been recovered during a search operation spanning more than three months.

At 8:30 am, following a solemn eulogy, military personnel began transferring the ceremonial caskets containing the remains to Ho Chi Minh City Martyrs' Cemetery for reburial.

The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, along with current and former senior Party and State leaders, military officials, and representatives of central and local authorities.

For the soldiers who had lain beneath the park for nearly six decades, the journey marked their long-awaited return to a place where they could be properly honored and remembered.

Rediscovered after nearly six decades

The soldiers lost their lives during the 1968 Tet Offensive and were buried in what is now Le Thi Rieng Park.

Their exact burial location remained unknown for decades, with rapid urban development gradually obscuring traces of the graves.

A breakthrough came when historical photographs collected by architect Nguyen Xuan Thang, together with eyewitness accounts and archival records, helped authorities narrow down the possible burial site.

Excavation work began yielding evidence on June 23, when soil layers appeared to match earlier assessments.

As search teams dug deeper, personal belongings began emerging from the earth, including fragments of hammocks, shirt buttons, and scarves.

These discoveries offered tangible reminders of the soldiers who had died more than half a century earlier.

After more than three months of painstaking efforts, authorities recovered the remains of 731 fallen soldiers from the park.

However, the identities and hometowns of most of them have yet to be established.

A final resting place in Ho Chi Minh City

Delivering the eulogy at Wednesday's ceremony, Nguyen Manh Cuong, vice-chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, paid tribute to the soldiers who had sacrificed their lives for Vietnam's independence and reunification.

He recalled that they had come from different regions and walks of life, including farmers, workers, teachers, craftspeople, and students.

Despite their different backgrounds, many were in their twenties when they joined the struggle, united by the hope of seeing a peaceful and reunified Vietnam.

"Due to the harsh conditions of war and the passage of time, the names, ages, and hometowns of most of the fallen soldiers recovered in this operation have yet to be identified," Cuong said.

"Wherever their hometowns may be, we sincerely hope that their spirits will regard Ho Chi Minh City as a peaceful place to rest.

"Today, they have returned to Mother Earth, embraced by the boundless love of the city's people."

During a visit to the recovery site in July, Party General Secretary and State President To Lam also expressed deep emotion at the thought that the soldiers had remained buried for 58 years.

He emphasized that although they had not lived to witness Vietnam's peace, reunification, and development, their sacrifices had helped secure the nation's future.

Wednesday's ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, several former senior state leaders, military officials, and representatives of local authorities.

For the people who lined the streets holding white flowers, the procession was more than a reburial ceremony. It was a final tribute to those who had given their lives for the country, ensuring that, even after nearly six decades, their sacrifices would not be forgotten.
