A vehicle repairman in a major city of Vietnam’s Mekong Delta has given free bicycles to students from disadvantaged family backgrounds for over five years.
Tran Van Giau saves every penny in order to buy second-hand bicycles and used components before creating new bicycles for poor school children across his area in Can Tho City.
His bicycle-&-motorbike repair shop, nestled at a bridge foot, often has bicycles intended for the students.
Giau said what motivates his action came six years ago, when he learned of the plight of two students whose parents were too poor to afford them bicycles.
“Then I was all thinking about how to help them. I finally decided to give them my own bicycles,” he recollected.
Giau has since maintained the homespun effort, arriving at scrap-dealing facilities across Can Tho to buy bicycle components.
Assembling a bicycle costs over VND500,000 (US$21.5), more than triple his maximum daily earnings.
He has worked with donors to provide around 15 bicycles to students every year and they have given over 90 so far.
“There are still many poor students here and they really need help. That’s why Giau’s kindness is highly appreciated,” said a local man called Tran Van Hoa.
