According to police in the province's Nha Trang Ward, the 35-year-old foreigner is being held for investigation on charges of violating road traffic regulations resulting in serious consequences.

Preliminary reports indicated that having drunk with friends, the man rode a motorbike back to his accommodation in the early hours of Monday.

While traveling along Tran Phu Street, near the April 2 Square area, he reportedly lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed.

The motorbike struck the 70-year-old woman, who was crossing the street at the time.

The crash left the victim critically injured, and she later died while being transported to hospital.

Authorities confirmed that a blood alcohol test showed the man’s alcohol concentration at 268.8 mg per 100 ml of blood, far exceeding Vietnam’s legal limit of zero.

Lieutenant Colonel Dao Xuan Truong, head of the ward police division, said that in the coming period, officers will intensify inspections of establishments that rent motorbikes to foreign visitors, particularly those failing to meet legal requirements.

Police will also coordinate with relevant agencies to address traffic safety violations involving foreign nationals in the area.
