A Russian man was asked to take a breathalyzer test after he started playing his ukulele when pulled over by police officers for not wearing a helmet in Hanoi.

The incident happened at the intersection of Dien Bien Phu, Phan Boi Chau, Cua Nam, and Hang Bong Streets in Hoan Kiem District on Tuesday evening.

Traffic police officers pulled over Aleks Ivanov, 29, after noticing he was riding a motorcycle without wearing a crash helmet as required by Vietnam’s road traffic law.

After stopping next to a median strip, Ivanov refused to cooperate, took out his ukulele, and started playing the instrument.

The officers gave him a breathalyzer test to check whether he was drunk.

The result showed that the Russian was not under the influence of alcohol.

Ivanov remained seated on his motorbike and refused to follow any instruction from the policemen.

After nearly an hour, Dao Viet Long, deputy head of the city’s traffic police division, arrived and eventually managed to persuade the visitor to come to the side of the street.

Ivanov failed to present his driver’s license, explaining that he had only been in Hanoi for a week.

He was eventually booked for failure to present a driver’s license and not wearing a crash helmet while riding a motorbike.

The violations are punishable by fines of up to VND200,000 (US$52) and VND300,000 ($13), respectively, according to Vietnamese traffic law.
