Saigon bars with persistent violations to be put on tight leash

Authorities suspect many of the bars to be hotspots for criminal activity

Saigon bars with persistent violations to be put on tight leash

Two bars having a poor track record for recurrent violations in Ho Chi Minh City are expected to undergo rigorous examination from government authorities near the end of the year in a city-wide move to crack down on patterns of illegal conduct in restaurants and nightclubs.

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee ordered that a two-pronged inspection of 212 Club and Las Vegas Beer Club, both in District 1, be carried out by both city and local authorities.

These businesses will undergo undercover investigations and raids launched conducted by the District 1 police and related agencies, under the instruction of city-level police, in order to discover drugs rings and arrest criminal gangs that operated out of each facility, according to the decision.

The bars are also expected to undergo repeated inspections by relevant authorities at the behest of District 1 People's Committee during the months ahead, especially over Christmas and Tet (Lunar New Year) holidays, and may face stringent punitive measures when contraband or illegal activity is discovered.

The move is preceded by reports submitted by District 1 People's Committee and the city's Department of Culture and Sports on the bars' repeated wrongdoings, such as engenderment of disorderly conduct, and failure to conform to fire regulations.

Notably, they are accused of allowing their patrons’ to consume drugs in the establishment, as well as dealing drugs to patrons.

The decision constitutes part of the government's extensive anti-crime campaign which commenced in early October this year in response to the increasing rate of offenses rampantly perpetrated in the nightlife industry.

The campaign targets karaoke restaurants, bars, and nightclubs all across Ho Chi Minh City that will be ongoing until February next year.
