Founded in 1864, the site has long been a cherished part of the collective memory of generations of Ho Chi Minh City residents.

Originally established by the French, the zoo was intended to raise public awareness about nature conservation while also serving as a research center for scientists.

In 1865, French botanist Jean Baptiste Louis Pierre was appointed the first director of the Botanical Garden, the precursor to today’s zoo.

During his tenure, he introduced various measures to develop infrastructure and collected numerous rare plant and animal species from around the world.

At Sunday's anniversary event, the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens also launched its official website, Saigonzoo.vn, allowing visitors to access information, purchase tickets, and explore educational programs on wildlife and nature for schools and institutions.

“When I was young, my parents used to take me here. Back then, visiting the zoo was something children looked forward to with great excitement,” Pham Thi Thu Hien, a visitor, said.

“Now that I have children, I bring them here to learn about plants and animals.”

According to her, in a densely built city, having a place full of greenery and wildlife for children to experience first-hand is truly meaningful.

“When you step inside, the heat and noise of the surrounding streets seem to fade away,” she said.

“You can hear birds singing and gibbons calling, and even adults like me feel relaxed and at ease.”

The Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens is currently home to more than 2,000 animals across 135 species, including rare ones.

It also preserves over 2,500 trees representing more than 900 plant species.

In recent years, the zoo has ramped up its digital presence, particularly on social media platforms like TikTok, attracting a large following.

With a more modern and youthful approach, the zoo has seen a revival, with increased revenue helping ensure staff income and sustain operations.
