At six in the morning, two days before Tet, the lights flicker on at Ba Hoa Market in HCMC, and the day begins not with a shout but with a murmur. For much of the year, Ba Hoa is a neighborhood market. But in the days leading to Tet, it becomes something else: a living ledger of migration, memory and trade.

HCMC – Anbooks and CSO Gallery will hold a panel discussion on February 18 in Hoi An, Quang Nam Province, to explore The Tale of Kieu and its significance in Vietnamese culture, along with the enduring legacy of the great poet Nguyen Du.
The event aims to celebrate and preserve the cultural heritage of this literary masterpiece and the world-renowned poet who created it. The Tale of Kieu is a unique literary and cultural phenomenon, with values that transcend time and space. Its influence is evident in the over 35 translations in more than 20 languages, with French, English, and Korean each having more than 10 different versions. The global stature of The Tale of Kieu and Nguyen Du was further cemented in 2013, when UNESCO honored Nguyen Du as a World Cultural Figure. Titled “The Tale of Kieu and the Great Poet Nguyen Du in Vietnamese Culture,” the panel discussion will delve into the historical context, intrinsic values, and enduring impact of the masterpiece. Experts will also discuss the importance of preserving and promoting its literary legacy in the modern era. The event will feature cultural and literary researchers, representatives of Nguyen Du’s family, and officials from the Hoi An People’s Committee, alongside literature, history, and heritage enthusiasts. One of the event’s highlights will be an exhibition of a record-breaking collection of The Tale of Kieu, officially recognized by the Vietnam Book of Records for its extensive volume.
