HCMC - Indonesia’s naval training ship KRI Bima Suci held a reception in HCMC on Sunday during a three-day visit seen as part of broader efforts to deepen maritime and regional cooperation between Vietnam and Indonesia.

The ship docked at Saigon Hiep Phuoc Port on May 10 under the “ASEAN Plus Cadet 2026” program, which brings together naval cadets from multiple countries for training and exchange activities. Speaking to The Saigon Times, Indonesian Ambassador to Vietnam Adam Mulawarman Tugio said the visit reflected growing cooperation between Vietnam and Indonesia following the upgrade of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. He said the vessel served as a platform for naval cadets from different countries to build networks and strengthen maritime cooperation. “As maritime nations, Indonesia and Vietnam share the same responsibility in ensuring maritime safety and security,” Tugio said. The ambassador added that both countries were expanding cooperation in trade, investment, renewable energy and education, with bilateral trade targeted at US$18 billion before 2028. He also highlighted Indonesia’s scholarship programs for Vietnamese students and plans to establish alumni networks in Vietnam to deepen cultural exchanges. Speaking at the event, Nguyen Minh Que, deputy director of the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs, said the visit highlighted the growing Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries and ASEAN’s shared commitment to maritime security and stability. Que said Vietnam and Indonesia shared strategic interests in maintaining peace, safety and freedom of navigation and overflight in the East Sea in line with international law and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Que also highlighted expanding cooperation between HCMC and Indonesia in trade, investment, tourism, education, culture, halal industry development and logistics. Meanwhile, Indonesian Consul General in HCMC Carolina Tinangon said the voyage involved cadets from 26 countries, including Vietnam, and promoted friendship and trust among future naval leaders. “The message is about how we can create peace and friendship,” Tinangon said. She added that the Indonesian Consulate General planned cultural collaboration programs between Vietnamese and Indonesian artists during Indonesia’s National Day celebrations in August. After departing HCMC, KRI Bima Suci is scheduled to continue its voyage to Shanghai and other international destinations as part of its naval diplomacy mission.
