HCMC – Noi Bai International Airport will put its expanded terminal T2 into operation on December 19, two months earlier than planned, after more than 18 months of construction.
The expansion and upgrade project began on May 19, 2024. It will raise the terminal’s designed capacity from 10 million to 15 million passengers per year, easing pressure on existing facilities, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
This is the first time a fully integrated ecosystem of automated equipment will be deployed at the terminal, giving passengers greater autonomy in the check-in and pre-departure process.
The project has a total investment of nearly VND5 trillion. The main construction package, valued at VND4.6 trillion, is fully funded by Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV). The project was originally scheduled for completion in February 2026.
Terminal T2 has been under heavy strain as international traffic continues to rise. Although its designed capacity is 10 million passengers a year, it handled nearly 13 million in the first 11 months of this year alone. The surge in international flights has posed challenges for airport authorities, who must ensure safety and service quality while construction takes place.
Nguyen Huu Loi, deputy director of the project’s management board, said the work is now largely complete. Contractors are conducting final cleaning and preparing for handover on December 11, ahead of the terminal’s official opening on December 19.
