“I first began reading The Saigon Times during my earlier posting at the Consulate-General of Japan in Ho Chi Minh City, from 1994 to 1998. Those were exciting times, with Vietnam opening up under the Doi Moi reforms and many Japanese companies were establishing their presence in southern Vietnam. As an officer responsible for economic affairs at the Consulate-General in those days, I found the up-to-date information The Saigon Times provided on Vietnam’s economy truly invaluable — and I am sure the Japanese business community here shared that sentiment.

HCMC – The Ministry of Health this evening, March 29, confirmed 88,378 fresh Covid cases, up 5,003 cases from the day earlier.
Among the domestic cases, Hanoi City as usual recorded the highest number at 8,993, followed by Phu Tho with 4,302 and Bac Giang with 4,047. Other localities detected fewer than 4,000 infections each. The health authorities of Quang Ninh and Binh Dinh today registered to add 17,600 and 5,662 cases, respectively, to the national Covid monitoring system. The latest Covid cases have raised the country’s caseload to nearly 9.4 million, with more than 7.1 million having fully recovered from the disease. The ministry also reported 55 new Covid fatalities in 26 cities and provinces, taking the Covid death toll to 42,413. Some 280,000 Covid vaccine doses were administered today, raising the country’s total number of doses given to people nationwide to nearly 205.5 million. In related news, Bac Ninh Province has resumed non-essential services such as karaoke lounges, bars and nightclubs. Ngo Van Luyen, deputy head of the office of the provincial government, said on March 28 that karaoke lounges, bars, nightclubs and massage parlors would resume from March 29. Dining services, sporting activities and cultural events were allowed to restart, while the province also allowed religious places, tourist destinations and heritage and historical sites to reopen, the local media reported. These facilities are required to strictly observe Covid safety protocols. The province reported 1,456 new Covid infections today.
