Held from May 28 to 30 (the 12th to 14th days of the fourth lunar month), the Water Ball Wrestling Festival in Van Village, Bac Ninh Province, is a centuries-old folk celebration rooted in local prayers for favorable weather and abundant harvests.
A group of volunteers from different parts of Vietnam, united by their shared passion for nature conservation and community support, set out on an extraordinary journey. They trek over nine kilometers through dense forest for half a day to deliver saplings and food supplies to the residents of Aur Village—a remote settlement deep within the Truong Son mountain range.
Aur is located in the Saola Conservation Area, part of the Truong Son Highlands, at an elevation of over 1,000 meters above sea level in A Vuong Commune, Danang City. The village is home to 23 households of the Co Tu ethnic minority, who mainly depend on farming, raising livestock, and forest protection for their livelihood.
Isolated by tough terrain, lack of roads, and no phone signal, life here faces many hardships. Still, the villagers stay dedicated to their ancestral land, defending the forest and keeping their unique cultural heritage alive.
Aur Village is located deep within the Truong Son mountain range. The only way to get there is by trekking through the jungle and crossing streams.In the early morning, villagers gather outside to assist volunteers in carrying saplings and supplies into the villageAfter more than five hours, the group reaches the heart of the villageThe team treks through the forest and crosses streams on their journey to the villageTaking a break by the stream to regain strength for the onward journeyThen, it is time to rest and experience the simple life in AurChildren joyfully play sports, unbothered by the rainWhile their parents raise pigs...... or prepare food for their daily lives using traditional methodsA moment of rest for a young family in the villageThe villagers here are hospitable. Every home happily shares its meal with visiting guestsThe warm hearth inside the communal house, a.k.a. Guol, provides welcome warmth for guests in the highlandsThe next day, as part of the “A Little Vietnam” project, the enthusiastic young volunteers join the villagers in crossing the stream to work on their upland fieldsThey not only instruct on the correct techniques for planting and tending fruit trees but also sow the seeds of hope for a better lifeThis trip is more than just delivering necessities before the rainy season; it is about conveying a profound message of environmental protection and promoting a green lifestyle within the younger generation
