Scorching heat drives Ho Chi Minh City residents to find every way possible to stay cool

Residents in Ho Chi Minh City use umbrellas, wide-brimmed hats, shaded bus stops, and roadside trees to escape extreme heat as temperatures in southern Vietnam reach 36-38 degrees Celsius in mid-May.

The Southern Regional Hydro-Meteorological Center has said hot and dry conditions continue across the region despite the approaching rainy season, with strong solar radiation, low humidity, and unstable southwest monsoon winds keeping temperatures high.

Many people avoid direct sunlight during midday hours by stopping under shop awnings, drinking cold water, or resting in shaded areas along major roads.

Street workers, ride-hailing drivers, lottery ticket sellers, and scrap collectors are among those most affected, using roadside trees and temporary shelters to cool down and prevent dehydration.

“I hope Ho Chi Minh City gets rain soon to cool things down,” said Trinh Loi Sung, who repeatedly washed his face with water while taking a break under roadside trees on Vo Nguyen Giap Boulevard after working outdoors.

People traveling across the city wear full sun-protective clothing, face masks, and gloves, while others delay journeys or search for temporary shade during the hottest parts of the day.

Forecasters said heatwave conditions in southern Vietnam are expected to continue in coming days before rainfall becomes more widespread later in the season.
