Sleeper bus driver fined for wrong-way driving along Da Lat expressway

Police also revoked his driver’s license for five months

A Vietnamese sleeper bus driver has been fined and had his license revoked after he was caught on camera running at high speed in the wrong direction along an expressway in Da Lat, a famous tourist city in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong.

Traffic police officers under the provincial police department on Monday afternoon imposed a VND7.5 million (US$322.5) fine upon Truong Van Phong, 54, who hails from the northern province of Ha Nam.

He also had his driver’s license revoked for five months.

Phong is a driver of Ngoc Hung Van Nhan passenger bus line, which operates along the route between Lam Dong and the northern province of Hoa Binh.

He was previously identified as the one behind the wheel of a sleeper bus that traveled in the wrong direction on the Lien Khuong-Da Lat Expressway on the morning of the same day.

Stretching more than 12 kilometers long, the expressway connects Lien Khuong International Airport with Prenn Pass, one of the routes leading to Da Lat.

The sleeper bus was caught on the dashboard camera footage of another vehicle, and the video was then submitted to traffic police officers in Lam Dong.

According to Phong’s written report, the bus was carrying ten passengers at the time of the incident.

As there was roadwork along the expressway that day, causing traffic to slow down, the driver decided to drive past the median strip into the opposite lane to continue his journey, he said.
