Southern Vietnam braces for 3 days of heavy rain

Most southern provinces and cities in Vietnam are forecast to experience heavy to very heavy rain over the next three days under the influence of the southern edge of the intertropical convergence zone.

The Southern Regional Hydro-Meteorological Center said the southern region is being affected by the southern edge of the intertropical convergence zone, whose axis runs through the South-Central region and the middle of the East Vietnam Sea.

As a result, southern Vietnam will see more cloudy skies, less sunshine, and an increase in both the coverage and amount of rainfall compared with recent days.

Provinces including Lam Dong, Dong Nai, Tay Ninh, Dong Thap, An Giang, and Ca Mau have a high chance of seeing moderate to heavy rain, with some areas receiving very heavy rain.

Rain is expected to be concentrated from noon through the afternoon and evening.

Temperatures are forecast to range from 24 to 27 degrees Celsius at night and 30 to 33 degrees Celsius during the day.

Southern Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City are also experiencing the first high-tide period of the eighth lunar month.

Heavy rain combined with high tides could cause flooding in low-lying areas.

Meanwhile, temperatures remain high in the southern region, while cold air has been spreading southward.

Although the cold air is no longer having a strong impact, it still brings lower temperatures.

The interaction between these contrasting weather patterns is creating atmospheric instability, triggering strong thunderstorms accompanied by lightning.

Tornadoes and very strong gusts could also occur.

What is the intertropical convergence zone that causes heavy rain?

The intertropical convergence zone is an atmospheric belt near the equator where winds from the two hemispheres, including trade winds and monsoon winds, converge.

In this zone, warm and humid air meets and rises strongly, condensing into dense thunderstorm clouds and causing prolonged heavy rain.

The zone is also commonly associated with various weather disturbances.

When conditions are favorable, these disturbances can intensify into low-pressure systems, tropical depressions, and storms.

In Vietnam, the intertropical convergence zone is typically active from May to October, which is also the peak period for storms and heavy rain.
