Status quo of transportation projects connecting Long Thanh Airport in southern Vietnam

Following the proposal to shift international flights from Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City to Long Thanh Airport in neighboring Dong Nai Province, many have expressed concerns over potential traffic congestion due to underdeveloped infrastructure. Tuoi Tre has reviewed the current status of key national transportation projects connecting to Long Thanh Airport.

Among the current connection projects, Road T1 has been completed, while Road T2 is ahead of schedule and expected to be finished by September.

The two road projects were commenced on July 14, 2023 at a total cost of over VND2.63 trillion (US$100 million).

Road T1 is 4.3 kilometers long, while Road T2 has a length of 3.5 kilometers

However, the section of the Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway that connects to National Highway 51 remains incomplete.

While several overpass pillars have been constructed, progress is stalled due to pending land clearance in Phuoc Thai Commune, Dong Nai Province.

Dong Van Minh, a local resident whose land was reclaimed for the project, said he and several other households had received land acquisition notices but are still waiting for compensation.

In the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau Expressway section in Phuoc Thai Commune, Dong Nai Province, one side of the road has been paved while the other side is still undergoing groundwork.

On the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway, traffic occasionally slows down at the intersection with National Highway 51 due to heavy vehicle flow. The expressway expansion is set to begin on August 19 to alleviate congestion before Long Thanh Airport becomes operational.

In addition to this expressway expansion project, Long Thanh Airport is also planned to connect with several rail and road systems.

In particular, the North-South high-speed railway is expected to break ground in December 2026, and the Long Thanh - Thu Thiem railway is in the pre-feasibility study phase.

Dong Nai Province is accelerating investment procedures for the extension of Ho Chi Minh City's Metro Line No. 1 to Long Thanh Airport, with an estimated investment of VND65 trillion ($2.5 billion).

In the future, the metro network is expected to become more interconnected as Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai adjust their urban planning under a new model and vision.

Long Thanh and Tan Son Nhat airports will eventually be linked via the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway and the expanded metro system of Ho Chi Minh City.

Other potential connections include Metro Line No. 3, planned to run from Vung Tau to Long Thanh Airport.

Regarding the road network, in addition to the key ongoing projects, there are also plans for the nearly completed Beltway No. 3, elevated roads along National Highway 51 from Vung Tau Intersection to the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau Expressway, and the proposed Beltway No. 4 of Ho Chi Minh City.

The infrastructure framework connecting Long Thanh Airport is largely in place and under development. The remaining challenge lies in accelerating administrative procedures and construction to meet urgent transportation demands.
