Team Vietnam claims four gold medals at Int’l Physics Olympiad

Vietnamese contestants at the 2017 International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) in Indonesia have placed fifth overall by winning four gold medals.

All five members won medals at the competition, including four golds and one silver.

With the result, Vietnam’s IPhO representatives have followed in the footsteps of their compatriots from the 2017 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Brazil, who made history by becoming the first team from Vietnam to secure third place after winning four gold medals.

Vietnam’s physics team, which consisted of five high school seniors from Hanoi, Quang Binh Province and Nghe An Province, were awarded four gold medals and one silver at the competition which concluded on Monday in Indonesia.

The 2017 IPhO, held from July 16-24 in the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta, saw the participation of 424 pre-college contestants from 86 countries and territories.

Vietnam finished fifth behind China, South Korea, Russia and Singapore.

First held in Poland in 1967, the IPhO is the second-oldest academic competition, after the IMO, of a group of annual international competitions across various areas of science collectively known as the International Science Olympiads.

Participants are given a three-question theoretical examination, followed by a practical exam that may consist of one or two laboratory tests.

Vietnam first competed in the Science Olympiads in 1981, and successfully hosted the 39th IPhO in 2008, when its contestants won four gold medals and one bronze.
