Thac Chuoi Lake and U Bo Mountain: Central Vietnam’s untouched natural beauty

Thac Chuoi Lake and U Bo Mountain, set amid the mountains and forests of Quang Tri Province in central Vietnam, boast unspoiled scenery, a distinctive climate, and potential for ecotourism and nature retreats.

U Bo Mountain and Thac Chuoi Lake are located in Bo Trach, Thuong Trach, and Truong Son Communes in Quang Tri.

With favorable climatic conditions and diverse natural landscapes, the area has significant tourism potential, but realizing it will require a well-planned investment strategy.

U Bo - Thac Chuoi: A pristine, peaceful retreat

Thac Chuoi Lake, near Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, offers peaceful views of still waters, green hills, and surrounding forests.

The lake winds around small peninsulas, creating a scenic landscape best appreciated from above.

The water reflects the sky and nearby mountains, while light mist sometimes drifts along the shore, adding to the area's quiet, natural charm.

Located in the western part of Quang Tri, the lake remains a scenic spot for visitors seeking a break from the hustle of city life.

The lake is part of a local irrigation project, with a main dam measuring 344 meters long.

When the water reaches its normal full level, the reservoir covers about 290 hectares.

Water levels vary considerably between the rainy and dry seasons, changing the look of the surrounding landscape.

The lakeshore remains largely undeveloped, with no tourism activities or visitor services.

Much of the shoreline is covered by natural vegetation and acacia plantations.

To the east, a solidly built dam helps supply water for agricultural irrigation.

Not far west of Thac Chuoi Lake, U Bo Mountain has several peaks ranging from about 750 meters to more than 1,000 meters above sea level.

The mountain lies alongside the western branch of the Ho Chi Minh Highway, which winds through the rugged terrain, offering scenic drives through lush forests.

From above, the road cuts through layers of green forest, while clouds often drift over the mountain peaks, creating a dramatic yet peaceful landscape.

The combination of the lake, high mountains, dense forests, and cool mountain climate gives the U Bo-Thac Chuoi area potential for ecotourism and nature retreats.

However, much of the area remains unspoiled and largely undeveloped for tourism.

A potential tourism draw for central Vietnam

In March, Quang Tri authorities approved the investment proposal for the U Bo Mountain-Thac Chuoi Lake Ecotourism, Resort and Entertainment Complex.

Covering more than 167 hectares across Bo Trach, Thuong Trach and Truong Son Communes, the project aims to develop an upscale destination for tourism, leisure and entertainment, with three- to five-star accommodations and an expected capacity of about three million visitors a year.

Plans include hotels, resort villas, serviced apartments, commercial and service facilities, and five cable car routes connecting the mountain's foothills to the summit of U Bo.

Provincial departments are completing legal procedures and coordinating with the investor, with construction scheduled to begin on October 30.

At the fifth meeting of the Quang Tri Party Committee on September 30, provincial Party secretary Vuong Quoc Tuan said the U Bo Mountain-Thac Chuoi Lake project would be fast-tracked.

The 7.5-kilometer cable car line is expected to be built within 18 months. Work is also planned for facilities around U Bo Mountain and Thac Chuoi Lake, along with connecting roads between Dong Hoi and the project site.

Coordinated investment in transport links is expected to connect existing tourist destinations with coastal tourism cities and Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, helping create an integrated range of high-end tourism experiences.
