This unique cultural and sporting event, rooted in Khmer tradition, plays an important role in preserving cultural identity and strengthening community bonds during the Sene Dolta Festival, a time for honoring ancestors after the harvest season.

This year’s competition featured 64 pairs of oxen from Tri Ton, Ba Chuc, O Lam, Co To, Vinh Gia, An Cu, Nui Cam, and Giang Thanh communes, as well as Chi Lang and Tinh Bien Wards.

From early morning, thousands of locals and tourists flocked to the race field. Many crowded along the roadside to catch a glimpse of the oxen as they raced.

“I have only seen the Khmer ox racing on TV before, but never in person. Watching it live for the first time is such a fun and fascinating experience,” said Van, a visitor from Ho Chi Minh City.

The competition followed a knockout format. Winning pairs advanced to the next round.

The Bay Nui Ox Racing Festival is recognized as national intangible cultural heritage.

After 30 editions, it has cemented its status as a signature cultural and tourism event, becoming a highlight of the Bay Nui region and contributing to An Giang’s socio-economic development.

According to Le Trung Ho, vice-chairman of the An Giang People’s Committee, the event originates from traditional Khmer customs during the Sene Dolta Festival.

What began as a simple game in temple courtyards to foster neighborhood ties has, over time, evolved into a large-scale annual festival and a distinct cultural hallmark of the region.
