Vietnam number 1 badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh on Saturday savored a 2 – 0 win against the host rival Chou Tien Chen at the final of the Yonex Open 2012 Chinese Taipei.
The world number 13 easily dominated the first set and closed it at 21 – 11, as he stands 30 places higher than the Taiwanese.
22-year-old Tien Chen fought back in the second set, taking advantage of the age difference as Minh is now 29.
His taller frame, 1.8m compared to 1.69, plus the exciting cheering of the home speculators, helped to fortify Chen’s attacks, thanks to which he managed to equalize 16 – 16 at one point in the match.
Minh, however, with much greater international experience, secured five out of the last six points of the match to claim a 2 – 0 victory after 42 minutes.
With the Yonex Open 2012 held under the Grand Prix Gold system of the World Badminton Federation, Minh has now achieved three Grand Prix championships.
He will receive a cash award of US$15,000, and obtain certain points that will help him climb back to 11th place on the world tally in the next update provided by the world federation.
Minh’s best previous rank was 6th place in April 2010.
