Top Lao leader visits Vietnam for Hanoi Convention signing ceremony

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh hosted a reception in Hanoi on Friday for Lao Party General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith, who is visiting the country to attend the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime, also known as the Hanoi Convention, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

PM Chinh welcomed Party chief and President Thongloun and highlighted the significance of Vietnam hosting this major international event, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday in Hanoi.

The Lao leader’s attendance will greatly contribute to the ceremony’s overall success, PM Chinh said.

During their meeting, the two leaders reaffirmed that the great, special friendship and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos continue to thrive.

In the first nine months of 2025, bilateral trade reached US$2.4 billion, up 57.1 percent year on year, while many joint projects are progressing on schedule.

PM Chinh emphasized that Vietnam always gives top priority to its unique and enduring relationship with Laos and firmly supports the country’s efforts in national protection, development, and reform.

The top Lao official congratulated Vietnam on hosting the Hanoi Convention signing ceremony, describing it as a milestone that enhances the country’s image, reputation, and leadership role both regionally and globally.

He also expressed deep sympathy for the losses caused by recent floods in northern Vietnam, reaffirming that the Party, state, and people of Laos always stand shoulder to shoulder with Vietnam under all circumstances.

The two leaders agreed to continue close coordination in effectively implementing key bilateral projects, as well as organizing important diplomatic activities to commemorate upcoming milestones in both nations’ histories.
