Trash piles persist across Ho Chi Minh City ward despite clean-up efforts

Piles of garbage, including plastic cups, bags, and household waste, were seen scattered across multiple sites in Ho Chi Minh City’s An Khanh Ward, with authorities identifying the area as one of several localities still facing persistent urban sanitation issues.

The city’s Department of Agriculture and Environment said in a March report that An Khanh remains among seven wards with unresolved waste pollution hotspots.

At the intersection of Bach Dong On and Duong Lam Streets, a large informal dump has formed despite posted no-dumping signs, with trash spilling onto the roadside alongside discarded furniture and broken glass.

Similar scenes were observed along An Tu Cong Chua Street and To Huu Street, where small, spontaneous dumping sites appear roughly every 100 meters, often mixed with overgrown vegetation and emitting foul odors.

Many of the waste clusters are located in sparsely populated or vacant resettlement areas, where abandoned land has become a frequent dumping ground.

Local resident Van Chau, a ride-hailing driver who regularly passes through the area, said the recurring build-up of waste near the neighborhood was frustrating despite periodic clean-up efforts by volunteers.

Authorities have installed warning signs at several locations, but rubbish continues to accumulate around them, with flies swarming over decomposing waste in some areas.
