In its May-October outlook, the agency said early-season activity could exceed the long-term average of about 3.2 systems in the East Vietnam Sea and 1.2 making landfall in Vietnam.
From August to October, activity is forecast to be below average, compared with a historical norm of about 6.8 systems and 2.8 landfalls.
Overall, the total number of storms and tropical depressions this year is expected to be lower than the long-term average of 12.7 systems and about 5.1 landfalls, and below the 21 recorded in 2025.
However, the agency warned of the risk of strong or very strong storms, including rapidly intensifying systems with complex and hard-to-predict tracks.
Heatwaves are forecast to intensify from May to July in northern and central regions, while easing in the Central Highlands and southern regions from late May.
Hot conditions are expected to persist in northern and central areas through August before weakening from early September in the north and from mid-September in central regions.
Average temperatures nationwide from May to October are forecast to be 0.5 to 1.5 degrees Celsius above the long-term average.
The rainy season in northern, Central Highlands, and southern regions is expected to begin around mid-May, while central Vietnam's rainy season is likely to start around September, the agency said.
