Truck illegally carrying two tonnes of endangered rosewood intercepted in central Vietnam

Officials on Sunday found a massive amount of wood from a threatened species unlawfully transported by a truck in central Vietnam.

At around 3:00 am, traffic police, an anti-smuggling squad and members from the Department of Market Management in Quang Nam Province checked a northbound truck driven by H.V.T. – a resident in Nam Dinh Province, located in the northern region.

They found that the 36-year-old driver was carrying two tonnes of Siamese rosewood – a type of valuable endangered hardwood well known for its blood red hue, and endemic to Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.

The wood had been cut into logs of different sizes, concealed under bags of duck feathers in the vehicle.

The driver failed to present invoices and legal documents proving the rosewood’s origin, saying that he was transporting the pieces to Hanoi from Ho Chi Minh City.

Local authorities impounded the logs and are conducting further investigation.
