At Eastern Visayas Hospital in Tacloban City, the newspaper’s representatives announced a donation in cash of US$50,000 to the typhoon victims. The donation was sourced from the charity fund founded by Dr Nguyen Huu Tung, chairman of the Board of Management of Hoan My Private Medicine University in Ho Chi Minh City.
Of the amount, $15,000 was directly handed by the representatives to the Philippines’ Department of Health Assistant Secretary Romulo A. Busuego, $5,000 will be transferred to the hospital and the remaining amount will be used to buy medicines that will be sent to the hospital later.
Receiving the donation, Busuego happily said, “I would like to thank Dr Tung and Tuoi Tre Newspaper very much for offering the donation. We need to have funds to pay for the operating cost of the hospital.”
Most of the donation will be spent on maintaining operation and purchasing some medical equipment, he added.
With 330 beds, the hospital is the only one that has managed to maintain the hospital’s operation after the typhoon hit the Philippines on November 8, leaving over 5,200 people dead and hundreds of thousands others homeless.
Money, rice to refugees
On Thursday afternoon a Tuoi Tre welfare team arrived in Tinago, Cebu City, where a refugee camp has been set up for victims of the typhoon, to hand more than 1 ton of rice and US$5,000 in cash to the camp.
Mr Joel Garganera, the camp’s manager, expressed his thanks to Tuoi Tre and all Vietnamese donors. He said the donation would meet the needs of the victims in the camp for 2-3 weeks.
The donation was part of the contributions by Tuoi Tre’s readers in support of typhoon victims, including Vietnamese. The newspaper expects the total value of donations will reach about VND500 million.
Tuoi Tre will also give support to Vietnamese victims who wish to return to Vietnam but cannot afford airfare.
Meanwhile, VietJet Air (VJA) said it has been granted permission from the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam and the Philippine authorities to take Vietnamese victims home.
Vietnamese victims with valid passports and other legal papers can contact VJA at +63 919 832 5221 (in the Philippines) and 0909475179 (in Vietnam) or through email at customerservice@vietjetair.com) before 12 pm November 23.
The flight for Ho Chi Minh City will depart at the Manila airport at 5 am Sunday, November 24, and the maximum number of passengers will be 140, the firm said.
